John Knowles Paine Concert Hall
Join the Student Center Orchestra at Harvard Griffin GSAS for music that evokes natural beauty as a way of commemorating and overcoming tragedy. English composer Ralph Vaughan Williams’ heartbreakingly gorgeous Pastoral Symphony depicts his experiences as an ambulance driver amidst the landscape of France during World War I. This juxtaposition resonates strongly with the World War II–era Second Symphony of Walter Piston, a pillar of Harvard’s music faculty for over three decades and a leading American composer in the mid-20th century. Piston’s scintillating score to The Incredible Flutist, his popular ballet about a circus that kicks up hijinks in an eccentric village, rounds out the program.
