Student Center Orchestra: Autochthonous

John Knowles Paine Concert Hall

The Student Center Orchestra at Harvard Griffin GSAS presents “Autochthonous”

Join the Student Center Orchestra at Harvard Griffin GSAS for a program exploring diverse approaches to capturing national culture in orchestral sound. William Grant Still titled his Fourth Symphony “Autochthonous,” meaning “native to the soil,” in order to capture the spirit of the American people. Still’s utterly original music, forged in classical, folk, and jazz styles, enters into conversation with the European-derived music of Boston’s “Second New England School,” including Harvard Music Department founder John Knowles Paine’s unfinished final work, an ode to Abraham Lincoln. Grażyna Bacewicz’s thrilling Piano Concerto ingeniously transforms folk tunes from her native Poland to round out the program.

Advance tickets go on sale on Friday, April 19 at 5:00 p.m. and are available until 12:00 p.m. (EST) on Friday, May 3, 2023.
Tickets will also be available at the door on the day of the concert.

Program:
George Whitefield Chadwick: Suite symphonique (1909), first movement
Grażyna Bacewicz: Piano Concerto (1949) — Stephen Ai, soloist
John Knowles Paine: Lincoln, A Tragic Tone Poem (1904, world premiere)
William Grant Still: Symphony No. 4, “Autochthonous” (1947)
