Margaret Jewett Hall, First Church Cambridge, 11 Garden St, Cambridge, MA 02138
Presented by the 22nd annual Vagantes Conference on Medieval Studies
All members of the Harvard community are warmly invited to join the participants and organizers of the Vagantes Conference on Medieval Studies for a special performance by the celebrated professional vocal ensemble Blue Heron. In this intimate and engaging evening event, Blue Heron will present a recital of medieval French song – ballades, rondeaux, and virelais by the 14th-century poet and composer Guillaume de Machaut and his successors through the mid-15th century, including Gilles Binchois, Guillaume Du Fay, and Johannes Okeghem. The program includes songs in praise of Love and My Lady, songs of heartbreak, a song of spring, a drinking song, and a virtuosic instrumental arrangement of a famous song by Binchois. The concert will be preceded by a brief introduction from Blue Heron artistic director Scott Metcalfe and will be illustrated by projected manuscript images, with a reception to follow. Co-sponsored by the Department of Music and the Standing Committee on Medieval Studies.
