Natalia Neira Nieto
Hi! My name is Natalia Neira Nieto. I’m a PhD student at the ethnomusicology program. I navigate between the aural and the visual to approach topics related to epistemology, value systems, historiography, migration and (self)representation. My focus is primarily on Latin American and Latinx-related musical practices, especially those within urban settings outside the American continent. I have a background in visual arts (Universidad Autónoma de Nuevo León, Mexico), as well as in musicology (University of Vienna, Austria) where I completed my master’s degree with the thesis titled “Understanding the ‘Latin’ in ‘Latin Music’: A Review of Academic Discourses on “Latin Music” in the Late Twentieth Century and Early Twenty- First Century” (Masterpreis 2024). I participate in different academic organizations, currently serving as part of the council of the Society for Ethnomusicology (SEM) and the Austrian national committee of the International Council for Traditions of Music and Dance (ICTMD).
