Michelle Lin

Theory

Born and raised in Vancouver, Canada, Michelle Lin is a PhD student in Music Theory. Her current research explores art songs from the Republic of China era, integrating critical theory and cultural studies perspectives. She received her Bachelor of Music degree in Piano Performance at the University of Toronto, where she won the Graduating Award, and obtained two master’s degrees in three years from the University of Texas at Austin in Piano Performance and Music Theory. Michelle has presented her research at numerous regional and international conferences including the Northeast Conference of Music Theorists (NECMT), Music Theory Society of the Mid-Atlantic (MTSMA), International Conference on Music Perception and Cognition (ICMPC), and her work has been published in Empirical Musicological Review.

As a pianist, Michelle has garnered national and international accolades including first prize at the Canadian Music Competition in solo and chamber music, and has performed as a soloist with the Vancouver Symphony Orchestra, Northwest Philharmonia of Seattle, and University of Toronto Symphony Orchestra. An avid collaborator, Michelle is currently the orchestral pianist of the Harvard Graduate Student Orchestra.
