Harvard Wind Ensemble Spring Concert: The Sounds of Liberty
Date and Time
Location
The Harvard Wind Ensemble presents "The Sounds of Liberty," a concert celebrating the 250th Anniversary of the US on April 17th at 8pm in Lowell Lecture Hall. The Harvard Wind Ensemble will be joined by the Middlesex Concert Band presenting music that honors the spirit of American liberty including Chester Overture by William Schuman, Charles Ives' Variations on America, Carmen Dragon’s arrangement of America the Beautiful and Stars and Stripes Forever by John Philip Sousa. The Harvard Wind Ensemble will also premiere a new work, Revolutionary Triptych by Leanna Primiani. The work is a suite for concert band that tells the stories of three teenage patriots whose acts of bravery helped shape the American Revolution: Sybil Ludington – who rode twice the distance of Paul Revere, Susanna Bolling – who smuggled intelligence to General Washington, and Betty Zane – who ran through enemy fire to resupply a fort under siege.
The Harvard Wind Ensemble is part of a commission consortium of ensembles who are supporting this new work.
The Harvard University Wind Ensemble is an organization of up to fifty talented musicians. It was founded in the 1960’s by conductor James Walker to offer musicians of the Harvard community the opportunity to study and perform original literature for winds and percussion.
