ArtsThursdays - Bohemian Trio: New Chamber Music

Free and open to the public 

The piano, cello, and saxophone of this New York-based trio bring the diverse sounds and rhythms of Cuba and the Americas to life in an original brand of new music. With roots in Cuba, Haiti, and the US, the Trio shifts intuitively among classical, jazz, and world music. At the heart of their collaborations are Yosvany Terry’s original works, which are driven by Afro-Caribbean rhythms, sweeping classical melodies, and a touch of improvisation.  

This ArtsThursdays performance on May 21 will feature Yosvany Terry, Senior Lecturer on Music / Director of Jazz Bands, along with cellist Mitchell Lyon, and pianist Orlando Alonso. Special Guest Fabian Almazan will join the Trio for this special performance.  

Artist Bios 

Yosvany Terry, Senior Lecturer on Music and Director of Jazz Ensembles at Harvard University is an internationally acclaimed Cuban musician, American composer, saxophonist, percussionist, bandleader, educator and cultural bearer of the Afro-Cuban tradition. Born into a musical family in Camaguey, Cuba, Terry went on to classical music training in Havana at the prestigious National School of Arts and Amadeo Roldan Conservatory.  After graduating, Terry worked with major figures in every realm of Cuban music and Jazz including pianists Chucho Valdes, Chick Corea, Gonzalo Rubalcaba, Eddie Palmieri and Avishai Cohen. Terry has been the recipient of prestigious awards including the Doris Duke, Creative Capital, Map Fund and Grammy nominations.  

Cuban born pianist and conductor Orlando Alonso has already established a flourishing international reputation through his orchestral and recital performances in North America, South America and Europe. Noted for his challenging programs, artistic maturity and versatility, his repertoire ranges from Bach, Mozart and Beethoven through the Romantics, Liszt and Brahms, to works by contemporary composers. 

Cellist Mitchell Lyon has performed across the country as a founding member of Empire Wild, a genre-bending crossover trio and Ambassador Prize Winner of the 2020 Concert Artist Guild Victor Elmaleh Competition. Passionate about community engagement and education, Mitch has been on the Teaching Artist Faculty of the New York Philharmonic since 2014 and  Juilliard School Extension Division. An alumnus of Juilliard (B.M., M.M.), Mitch was the recipient of several fellowships and led a multidisciplinary team of performing artists—actors, dancers, and musicians—to New Orleans in 2012 and 2013 to help rebuild the city after Hurricane Katrina. 

Cuban-American pianist/composer Fabian Almazan found his musical roots as a child in Havana where he first became involved in the classical piano tradition. Almazan is the founder and director of Biophilia Records. As a performer, Almazan has developed a personal voice through the electric manipulation of the acoustic piano in live and studio settings.
